Is Microsoft’s $677 billion RPO revenue or cash already collected?

Neither label is accurate: Microsoft reports commercial remaining performance obligations as a future-period balance that includes both unearned revenue and amounts to be invoiced later.

The first answer

Microsoft’s FY27 Q1 commercial RPO was $677 billion, but that balance is not current-quarter revenue or a measure of cash already collected. Management said its weighted average duration was 2.3 years and expected roughly 30% to be recognized as revenue within 12 months. That timing expectation is not next year’s total company revenue or a collection guarantee. The metric is commercial RPO, not an AI-only balance.

What the $677 billion measures

Microsoft’s FY27 Q1 metrics report commercial RPO in billions. The definition includes unearned revenue and amounts still to be invoiced and recognized in future periods. Since some amounts have yet to be invoiced, the total does not show cash already collected. It is also not revenue earned in the reported quarter.

What the recognition estimate tells you

On the earnings call, management gave a 2.3-year weighted average duration and expected about 30% of RPO to become revenue within 12 months. That is a timing outlook for this balance, not next year’s total company revenue, a conversion promise, or a payment timetable.

Compare like with like

Use reported revenue for what the company earned in a period, and the cash-flow statement for cash moved in that period. Keep both separate from RPO and its expected timing. Do not label the commercial balance as AI sales: Microsoft reports Cloud revenue separately, and RPO is not disclosed as AI-only. This distinction does not settle an investment view.

Before comparing the numbers

  1. Keep the commercial label and fiscal quarter beside the balance.
  2. Separate the RPO amount from the expected recognition timing.
  3. Read revenue and cash flow as separate period measures.
